We will leave at 5:30PM on Friday and return by 2:00PM on Sunday. Camping and cooking is by Patrol. There is no cost other than Patrol Food for this event. You must sign up by Sunday, Jume 9! Justin is the Scout-in-Charge. Please direct any questions to him.

Check out the website for the trails at www.allegrippistrails.com to see what you are getting into. We will be doing this because it is not only to have fun, but to explore the other side of the lake. If you have a bike, bring it. You have to bring your helmet and bike water bottle too. Or let us know if you have to borrow these. It will take us one hour to get there Saturday morning to the trails. Your patrol must pack lunches for Saturday. Finally, we will be heading back to Camp Putt where the scouts will have their relaxation time if they want. Bring flashlights and any color duct tape if you want to do a night ride Friday night! Oh and one more thing: Happy Trails! ~Woody

Patrols will be planning their meals, collecting money for grocery shopping ($15 max.), and shopping for their own food. The theme for June Biking. Justin has planned a mountain bike trek for Saturday, and possibly a night bike trek. Cycling Merit Badge, an Eagle Scout required badge, will be taught by Eagle-Eye McFadden. Please print out the Workbook and begin working on the requirements.

There will be plenty of fishing too. Hopefully, one of our scouts can hook into a 30lb. Striped Bass again! If you want to work on Fishing or Fly Fishing Merit Badge, please see Mr. Vohs

This is one of our favorite camps! Here is the recap from the last trip to Putt’s Camp.

A Permission Slip will be emailed to you when you sign up. You must turn that into your Patrol Leader by June 9. Signup at the troop meeting or online:

We all met up around 5 to get packed up quickly and set off with 3 new scouts, Tuna, MacBook, and Alex. When we arrived we were in a rush to get to our site to chill out, and Desktop and I were using our mad patrol box carrying skills to get set up quick. Woody and I showed Tuna and MacBook how to set up Troop tents and patrol areas. The rest of the evening was spent playing the guitar and the mandolin by the fire.

We arose in the morning to get brekky cooked, eaten, and cleaned so we could go on our hike. We went down into the town to get to the main battlefield for our 10 miler. Along the way we learned a lot about Antietam through monuments, Union and Confederate lines, the visitor center, and a short film. Perhaps one of my favorites was the Dunker Church, a church overrun by Union soldiers. Around lunch time, we stopped at the visitor center to eat lunch, and to our surprise, an ice-cream truck showed up. We continued on our hike until we came back to camp. After regrouping, some of us went to Burnside Bridge (It was a bee swarm), and there was a nice view of it on our way back. We went back, hung out and played games and instruments until 9 o’clock on a Saturday, when we had an awesome campfire, topped off with introducing our new scouts to the ashes and roses, thorns and buds.

On our last day, we woke up at an UNGODLY 6 AM to get packed up for Harper’s Ferry. We stopped at the Appalachian Trail Museum to check out some awesome pictures of the whole trail, and a 3D topographical map of the trail. We even saw Monkey’s dad in one of the thru-hiker books. After that we took a short hike down to the historic town which was the most fantastic thing ever!!! We hiked across the cool foot bridge and found a place to hold church. who needs a sanctuary when you have the great outdoors! Monkey and St. Nick conducted a fine church service and we rose to the Scoutmaster’s challenge by walking in sublime silence back across the foot bridge to Harper’s Ferry. Even Skittles was able to be quiet over the bridge. It was pretty cool down there and we enjoyed walking around (even though there was no way we could have gotten through it all). We got some ice cream/ sausages/ a lot of nachos at a small outside restaurant. We started back up for the cars and went back home to Carlisle. We were all pooped-out from being in 4 STATES that weekend and we lazily unpacked so we could go home. This was a truly awesome camp and I hope to see you on the next one.

Check out the photos!

Your’s truly,

On Sunday, April 21st, Engie held Project Starfishes’ Improv Showcase at the Grace. Scouts arrived at 12:30, and the show started at 2:00. Everyone enjoyed the show, and some of the scouts were even in it!

Project Starfish was Engie’s Eagle Project. He held four improv trainings to benefit local teens with Autism. These workshops were specifically tailored to improve on skills such as self-esteem, confidence, recognizing and responding to emotions, group work, friendship building, following directions, eye contact, agreement as a group, and recognizing body language and personal space. These are areas that Autism tends to damage or disable.

The show itself was a blast. The improv troupe was spectacular at quickly thinking outside the box! Before the show, Engie gave a speech to thank everyone for attending, and to encourage everyone touched by Autism. Donation Buckets were placed at both exits, and over $400 was raised to kickstart the new Drama Club at the NHS, his beneficiary!

After the show, there was a very quick tear down (If only we can tear down camp as fast as we could tear down the MPR…). Then, everyone was surprised to a Starfish-themed cast party elsewhere in the church. Thanks Party Cannon! During this celebration, we discussed our plans for going to Philmont next summer.

I would like to personally thank everyone that helped me with my project. As this chapter in my scouting career begins to close, I am looking forward to the new adventures I will be having with you, my friends, as an Eagle.

Engie

PS: I am excited to report that Evan and AJ, two of the teens in the showcase, have joined Troop 5! This is amazing, and I am looking forward to camping with them.

Pictures will be up shortly!

Join the Troop on an Appalachian Trail hike this May. It will be an overnight hike from the 25th to the 26th of May. We will leave promptly from the Church at 7:15 AM. You should be at the church by 7.

This is an unusual trip because the scouts will be caring everything they want for the two days of hiking. All the food and cooking supplies should be accounted for before the 25th. When everyone arrives we should put the backpacks into the vehicles and leave. There will be an option to hike a shorter distance and just do a morning hike. This will be about 7 miles. If enough scouts are interested in this hike then a will arrange for a pickup near town. After that, the remaining scouts will hike about ten miles to camp.

Backpacking is very different than what most of the scouts will be used to. It takes careful preparation and specialized supplies. The patrol leaders should be working with their patrol to prepare for this hike. It may sound intimidating but there is nothing to be worried about if the Scout Motto, “Be Prepared,” is observed. Some specialized items that all the scouts will need is a hiking back pack and boots. This is not a hike that can be ventured in sneakers and a school backpack. Boots will protect you ankle on the rocky path and prevent blisters. The hike in total will be about 20 miles. Hiking 20 miles in two days with the added weight of your gear will put unfamiliar stress on the feet. Boots will help protect and comfort feet when accompanied with hiking socks. The backpack is also important. The average weight of a hiking pack is 30-50 pounds. This is a short hike so some of the packs will not reach that weight. Nonetheless, carrying any amount of weigh on ones shoulders for an extended amount of time will cause stress. Hiking packs transfer the weight to the hips which can support much more stress. Water bottles are of course very important and are even more critical when hiking away from an extra water source. Rain protection is also important, each scout should have a personal rain jacket and a waterproof pack cover. See this site for more tips.

The patrols should work together to prepare food. Anything that will be eaten and used to cook with needs to be carried in. this means that small light weight stoves will be useful along with sharing the burden of pots and pans.

Hope to see you all there,

This April 26-28 Troop 5 will be camping on Antietam Battlefield. Antietam is a battlefield at Sharpsburg Maryland, where the bloodiest Civil War battle was fought. If you want to learn more about Antietam you can look it up on www.nps.gov/ancm/. We will be able to watch a movie about the battle in the visitor’s center, and then we’ll be going for a 10 mile tour hike and have the opportunity to earn a patch for this hike.

We will be camping on the battlefield and maybe even see a spooky specter!! If we can get packed up early on Sunday, on the way home we will stop at Harper’s Ferry where John Brown had his famous raid and was killed. It will be a blast!

Patrol food and souvenirs will be the only cost for this trip. Patrols should cook like soldiers! We’ll meet at the scout house at 5:00 on Friday, April 26 to arrive at the Battleground by 7:30 and this time, we will leave at 5:30, so arrive ready get packed the quickest we’ve ever done it! Let’s prove we can do it! We will arrive back home at 3:00 on Sunday afternoon, April 28.

The last day to sign up will be April 14. If you have any questions, see the scout in charge, Noah.

Like our camping trips to Gettysburg Battlefield, we get to camp on the battlefield in a special camp for scouts. There is no charge for the camp! There may not be many trees, so please don’t plan on hanging in a hammock.

You will earn the Historic Trails Award, which includes a patch. The 10.5 mile hike across the historic Antietam Battlefield will help you become familiar with the locations and descriptions of the fateful events which occurred on the battlefield in 1862. It stands yet, as the bloodiest single day’s action in American military history. Hiking this trail affords you the unusual privilege of retracing the path of history over terrain that appears much like it did over one hundred years ago. Check out the map

Sunday, you will get to visit Harper’s Ferry National Historic Park. Check out the map!
Cooking will be by patrol ($15 max); plan a packed lunch for the Saturday hike. You must have a water bottle and your ten essentials (patrols can share some items). You may want to bring some spending money for the gift shop or snacks.

You must sign up online or at the Wendy’s or Walmart Fundraiser by April 14.
